From Friday, Sept. 23, to Saturday, Sept. 24, Colgate hosted campus community members and alumni for a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance Center.

In the fall of 2017, Colgate Research Associate Dennis Geist noted signs of imminent eruption at the Sierra Negra volcano in the Galápagos Islands. Little did he know at the time that his observations paired with a new volcanic forecasting program would lead to the accurate prediction of the eruption five months in advance.

Questions on happiness have perplexed and fascinated for centuries, and for the last year, they are questions that Professor Rebecca Shiner and 17 of her students have been working to answer.

In the summers of 2019 and 2020, �������� professors Krista Ingram and Ahmet Ay set course for Casco Bay, Maine, with student researchers Lauren Horstmyer ’22 and Hailey Orff ’24. Together, they captured thousands of images of harbor seals for SealNet.

On March 9, �������� welcomed Robin Wall Kimmerer to Memorial Chapel for a talk on her bestselling book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants.

The �������� Department of Physics has received the Improving Undergraduate Physics Education Award from the American Physical Society

This year’s MLK celebration included six days of extensive programming, Jan. 24–Jan. 29, centering on the theme “Legacy through Unity in Diversity.”
