Why did you choose Colgate?

Colgate has such great academics and such a beautiful campus, I can’t imagine going anywhere else. My dad (John Aldrich '86), my uncle (Ted Aldrich '83), my aunt (Susie Aldrich '85), and my cousin (Ben Aldrich '15) all attended Colgate, so it’s a family tradition.

Colgate was one of the only schools I was able to visit during the pandemic, and even though it was rainy — and the only tour I got was an outdated one from my dad — I remember thinking how beautiful the campus was and how friendly the few people we ran into were.

You’re involved in a number of activities. Which one is your favorite?

I started the Baking Club my first year at Colgate. It has taken time and a lot of work to get up and running. But I’ve had so much fun meeting new people who love baking — and hanging out while we create something amazing together. Baking Club is one of the friendliest and most relaxing clubs on campus (although I might be biased).

I fell into frisbee while attending the club sports fair my first semester. I walked by the frisbee team’s table, and the captain caught my eye. She aggressively pointed at me and then at the sign up sheet. I felt too awkward and flustered to do anything but walk over and sign up, and I’m so glad I did. The frisbee team is like a supportive family to me now.

Tell us about the mentorship you have received while at Colgate.

My adviser, Professor of English Michael Coyle, has been an invaluable guide for my academics since my First Year Seminar. He has introduced me to other professors within my major. He’s listened with impressive patience as I debated class choices and study abroad options. Along with my professors, the older members of my frisbee team and a cappella groups really made me — and my classmates — feel welcome and important at Colgate.

What is your favorite place on campus and why?

I’ve practically moved into Lathrop Hall, specifically the third floor English major lounge. It’s such a relaxing space, and I’ve had a lot of late nights there doing work, as well as making use of the tea kettle and whatever free snacks I can find. I’ve focused on getting work done by myself — and I've hung out with friends ... doing significantly less work.

What advice would you give to future Colgate students?

It’s intimidating coming to a new place, but Colgate is incredibly welcoming. There are so many great clubs on campus where you can find where you belong. Try new things and put yourself out there, and you will meet amazing people who will make Colgate feel like home for you.
