Sociology Professor Carolyn L. Hsu’s research examining Chinese citizens’ opinions on their government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis was published recently in the Washington Post. Hsu said the analysis is a result of an ongoing survey research project, funded in part by the Colgate Research Council, looking at civil society and citizenship practices in China.

According to the analysis, Hsu’s research, “conducted before and after the outbreak, offers some unique insights into Chinese citizens’ views of their government’s covid-19 response. Contrary to some analyses, the results are less optimistic that the state can manage national disasters and emergencies alone. Rather, Chinese citizens believe assistance from civil society organizations is needed at times of national crisis.”
